How to Check a Moving Company’s USDOT Number
Checking a professional moving company’s history and validity should be priority number one when hiring movers. Fortunately, if a relocation involves crossing state lines, the mover must be governed by FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) rules and regulations. Among these rules includes the mandatory registration of a USDOT Number. The ability to look up a mover’s USDOT Number makes it infinitely easier for customers to find important information on a professional moving company. So before you hire movers to handle a move, read our directions for how to check a moving company’s USDOT Number.
What is a USDOT number?
An interstate moving company’s USDOT Number serves as its unique identifier, allowing the U.S. government to collect, monitor and assess the company’s various compliance reviews, crash investigations, audits and inspections. More importantly, potential customers can use a USDOT Number to 1) see if the moving company is properly registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation. And 2) easily look up safety information about a registered moving company before hiring them.
How do I use it?
You should be able to easily find an interstate moving company’s USDOT Number on their company website (most commonly seen at the bottom of the home page) or by asking them directly. Once you have the number, enter it into the FMCSA’s mover search tool under “U.S. DOT #” and press “Search.”
